Nelson and Collingwood: Two pearlware jugs and a mug, early 19th century Each printed in blue with the titled portraits of Lord Nelson and Lord Collingwood, a wreath enclosing patriotic symbols of victory and emblems of the union, formal borders also of nautical theme including shells, seaweed and fouled anchors between laurel swags, brown enamel rims, 11.5cm, 12cm and 20cm high (3) Footnotes: At the battle of Trafalgar the two attacking lines of the British fleet were led by Horatio Nelson on HMS Victory and Cuthbert Collingwood aboard HMS Royal Sovereign. The latter's hull recently coppered moved more swiftly and broke the enemy line first. Upon seeing this Nelson reportedly pointed at Royal Sovereign, announcing 'See how that noble fellow Collingwood carries his ship into action!' Nelson and Collingwood enjoyed a long friendship, first meeting as young midshipmen in 1773. When Collingwood died in 1810, he was buried close to Nelson in St Paul's Cathedral.
