A RARE STAINLESS STEEL MANUAL WIND BRACELET WATCH Model: Weems Reference: 6B/159 Date: c. 1930s Movement: 17-jewel manual wind, No. 5'934'318 Dial: White Case: Round, snap on case back, No. 3266/40 (military number) Strap/Bracelet: Stainless steel ladder style link Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel clasp Signed: 33.5mm Weight: None Footnotes: As the threat of war intensified in the mid-1930s, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Forces (AAF) planned ahead, seeking a hacking watch for pilots to use for simple yet precise navigation. Collaborating on the project, they redesigned the original Weems watch (lot 14) into a more simplified, easy-to-read version. Specifically, the British Weems 6B/159 was manufactured in accordance with specification G.535, and unlike the American A-11 Weems model, it was produced in a larger 34mm version. A key feature of both models was the hacking function, which allowed pilots to stop the second hand for accurate time synchronization. Based on our research, approximately 7,000 watches were produced to this specification. The present lot is a beautifully preserved example of the British Weems. The case back bears the correct markings of the Air Ministry (AM), the procurer 'Goldsmiths & Silversmiths,' the specification 'Mk. VIIA,' and '6B/159.' It is a rare trophy for any military watch collector. Lot to be sold without reserve.
