A FINE AND RARE OVERSIZED SILVER MANUAL WIND SECOND-SETTING POLITS WRISTWATCH Model: Second-setting Date: c. 1940s Movement: 15-jewel manual wind, No. 5'272'700 Dial: White, rotating inner dial Case: Round, double hinged snap on case back Strap/Bracelet: Brown leather Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel buckle Signed: Case, dial and movement Size: 47.5mm Accompaniments: None Footnotes: As early as 1923, Longines dedicated themselves to become the official watchmaker for aviation watches. In collaboration with US Navy Officer Philip Van Horn Weems and aviator Charles A. Lindbergh, many aviation records were using Longines timing equipment at the time, including the Lindbergh Hour Angle to the Weems Second Setting watch. Both models hold an integral part within aviation history. In 1929, Weems developed the 'Weems System of Navigation' for marine navigation, a series of navigational tools that led to the creation of a rotating central seconds dial. This timepiece was typically oversized, allowing the navigators to accurately synchronize the seconds hand, a critical feature for accurate navigation. Longines confirmed that the present lot was invoiced to Longines-Wittnauer Watch Co., who were for many years their agent for the USA, on 31st July, 1935.
