AN EXPERIMENTAL/DEVELOPMENTAL MODEL FOR THE MOSS AND JOHNSON REVOLVER, c. 1871. .41 caliber, octagonal barrel with in-filled wedge slot, mounted on a grooved cylinder post and opening lever below, smooth cylinder with shell holder at rear, unmarked frame, brass trigger guard and grip frame with in-filled serial number 4572, and walnut grip; tag attached to trigger guard from 1960 Flayderman catalog describing the original patent model of the Moss and Johnson revolver which bears similarities to this gun. Barrel lg. 4, overall lg. 8 3/4 in Footnotes: Note John L. Moss and Edward W. Johnson were inventors who operated a mall gun manufacturing company in Columbus, Mississippi, and patented a .41 caliber cartridge revolver (U.S. Patent No. 116,078 dated April 11, 1871). This patent for the revolver, was made in the factory of the American Standard Tool Company near the final days of the Manhattan company's existence.
