A MANHATTAN NAVY MODEL SERIES III REVOLVER WITH EXPERIMENTAL SPRING PLATE, Newark, New Jersey, 1861-64. Serial number 20679, .36 caliber octagonal barrel marked on the top 'MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS Co. NEWARK N.J.' with German silver front sight and loading lever below, bottom of barrel marked 'K' and with a dot; five-shot roller engraved cylinder with five scenes marked 'PATENT DEC 27. 1859'; steel frame with spring plate mounted on the back face of the cylinder mortice, with silvered brass trigger guard and grip strap; walnut grip, all visible serial numbers match including the wedge. Barrel lg. 6 ½, overall lg. 11 ¾ in. Condition: Barrel, frame and cylinder toned to tray, muzzle has area of light pitting, cylinder scenes are strong; trigger guard and grip frame retain approx. 90% silvering, grip has minor wear, action functions properly. Footnotes: Provenance The Fred. B. McDonald Collection. Note The spring plate was intended to ensure proper seating of the percussion cap on the cylinder nipples as it approached the firing position. Nutter states that only a few thousand series III revolvers were fitted with the spring plate and that all known examples appear on revolvers below serial number 21000. (Waldo E.
