A FLINTLOCK MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA MUSKET, last quarter of the 18th century. 38 1/2 in., .76 caliber round barrel with ring decoration at the breech; French Model 1763/66-style lock marked with a crown over 'D' behind the pan; cherry stock, the right side of the butt carved 'XL.V' and branded 'MASS' below and 'SB' behind the trigger guard, carved plateau around the breech plug tang; brass furniture including an India Pattern-style butt plate and trigger guard, convex Land Pattern-style side plate, cast brass rammer and entry pipes and a sheet brass nose band, sling swivels, steel rammer with button head and plain end. Overall lg. 54 5/8 in Condition: Barrel and lock toned to mottled brown, stock has a strip of wood loss along the right side of the barrel channel and a short crack near the nose band, scattered dings and dents; brass is toned to yellow, action functions properly.
