A CASED AND ENGRAVED PAIR OF ENGLISH PERCUSSION POCKET PISTOLS PRESENTED TO COL. BENHAM, 10TH HUSSARS, by Durs Egg, London, second quarter of the 19th century. 3 in., .47 caliber re-blued barrels engraved 'D. Egg' on the top, the box lock frames with engraved foliate scroll decoration and folding triggers, post-1813 Birmingham proof marks located on the underside of the barrel and frame, checkered walnut stocks with oval German silver thumb pieces engraved 'B' and cast brass lion's face butt caps; housed in a mahogany case with brass plate on the top engraved 'Coll Benham/10th Hussars.,' opening to a compartmented green baize lined interior with brass oiler, barrel/nipple wrench, screw driver, a cap tin and a brass powder flask marked 'DIXON & SONS,' the inside of the lid with Egg's label. Overall lg. 7 1/4 in. Condition: Barrels are re-blued, frames a cleaned bright, stocks have minor wear and blemishes, actions function properly; case has a few blemishes on the exterior, interior is faded and has some insect damage, accessories are in good overall condition. Footnotes: Note An examination of the published Army Lists and Regimental histories for the 10th Hussars did not reveal an officer with the surname Benham but it is possible that the name was misspelled when engraved and should read Bonham as Henry Frederick Bonham (1808-1856) served as lieutenant colonel in the regiment 1846-1851.
