Brass hilt, counter-guard deeply marked on the front '27,' with two branches connecting to the knuckle bow and pommel cap with later engraved inscription 'Presented/to/GEO. C. THIMMESCH/BY/GEO. W. THOMPSON/Cavalryman Co. E. 5th Ia/1861-1865' with leather covered grip and partial twisted brass wire wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip, single narrow and single wide fuller, the right ricasso marked 'U.S./1864/A.G.M.' and the left ricasso marked 'C.ROB[Y]/W. CHELMSFORD/MASS'; steel scabbard with two suspension rings, the back of the throat area with an applied brass plaque engraved 'Engaged in many battles including/Nashville Dec, 15-16/64./Columbus, Ga. Apr. 16-1865./The last battle of the war/Seven days after Gen. Lee's Surrender/Dubuque, Ia June 10-1914.' Blade lg. 34 3/4, overall lg. 41 in. Condition: Hilt toned to deep brown, grip is eroded and most of the twisted wire is missing, blade has gray/brown mottling and old dried grease; scabbard toned to brown and has overall pitting.
