A 7TH CAVALRY SERIAL NUMBER RANGE SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR CARBINE, 1875. Serial number 39258, .45-70 caliber, round barrel with adjustable rear ladder sight, the loading door marked 'MODEL/1873/US'; flat lock plate with rounded tail marked in front of hammer with an spread wing eagle and 'U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873'; walnut stock; steel furniture with butt plate tang marked 'US'; with a leather saddle holster. Barrel lg. 22, overall lg. 41 1/4 in. Condition: Barrel is toned to mottled gray, sight has a sheet brass repair on the elevation bar, lock toned to mottled gray, stock shows extensive signs of use including abrasions, dents, gouges and shrinkage cracks at the butt, missing sling ring, action functions properly, bore is rough but rifling is clearly visible for entire length. Footnotes: Note After the Battle of Little Big Horn, a number of 7th Cavalry Springfield carbines were recaptured from the Indians. The serial numbers of those guns were recorded in a Report of the Chief of Ordnance, Ordnance Notes, No. CXV, October 1, 1897. Among the recaptured carbines is serial number 39253, only five numbers away from the present gun (James S. du Mont, Custer Battle Guns, (Fort Collins, Colorado: The Old Army Press, 1977), pp. 87-88).
