A CASED INSCRIBED COLT ROOT MODEL 1855 SIDEHAMMER REVOLVER, 1856. Serial number 13792, .28 caliber octagonal barrel with two-line address reading 'COLT'S PAT./1855' and 'ADDRESS COL. COLT/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.'; blued frame, cylinder with pioneer and Indian scene, patent and serial number markings, walnut grip, the grip frame engraved 'Geo. F. Whall.'; all serial numbers match; housed in a mahogany case opening to a compartmented red velvet lined interior with a screwdriver, eagle embossed copper powder flask and brass Colt bullet/ball mold. Barrel lg. 3 1/2, overall lg. 7 3/4 in. Condition: Revolver retains approx. 10% bluing, grip has minor blemishes, action functions properly; case has a repaired crack in the lid, the interior has minor fading, accessories are worn. Footnotes: Note George F. Whall (b. 1819) enlisted as a private in Company D of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry on May 24, 1861. During his service Whall saw action at the 1st Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Williamsburg, and the Battles of Fair Oaks and Seven Pines. He was discharged on disability November 19, 1862.
