A SECOND MODEL MAYNARD CARBINE, c. 1864-65. Serial number 15566, 20 in., .50 caliber blued round rifled barrel with folding leaf rear sight, the octagonal breech marked 'S' on the left side; case hardened frame marked on the right side 'MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS.' and on the left side 'EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE./MAY 27, 1851./DEC. 6, 1859.' with sling bar and ring; walnut stock with 'AJN' cartouche for sub-inspector Augustus J. Noble, and 'JM' cartouche for inspector James Mills who inspected Maynard carbines from about June 22, 1864 through May 1865; with steel butt plate. Overall lg. 36 3/4 in. Condition: Very good overall condition with bluing largely intact on the barrel with areas of subtle thinning and light oxidation, bore has areas of oxidation and pitting but strong rifling; frame mostly toned to mottled gray/brown, hammer retains approx. 50% bluing, lever and butt plate toned to mottled brown, action functions properly; stock has minor dings and dents.
