A PRESENTATION NEW HAVEN ARMS HENRY REPEATING RIFLE, 1865. Serial number 8982, .44 Henry caliber, octagonal barrel with magazine tube below, the top of the barrel marked 'HENRY'S PATENT OCT. 16. 1860/MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN. CT.' and with serial number at the breech; brass frame with left side engraved 'Presented to/Charles S. Wheeler/by the/Proprietors and Clerks/of the/Eagle Mills./N.Y.'; walnut stock with brass butt plate and sling swivel mounted on the left side. Barrel lg. 24, overall lg. 43 7/8 in. Condition: Good overall condition, barrel and magazine tube are toned to mottled gray/brown, magazine spring and follower are intact, left side of the barrel has several small dents near the muzzle; frame toned to deep yellow, lever and hammer toned to mottled gray/brown, stock has scattered dings, dents and scratches and a gouge on the left side, action functions properly. Footnotes: Provenance The Herb Glass Collection. Note Eagle Mills was an important industrial area along the banks of the Posten Kill River in Brunswick, New York, during the mid to late 19th century. The area was named Eagle Mills after the Eagle Flour Mills that flourished there in the 1850s.
