An Irish Ormolu-Mounted And Enamelled Sabre Presented By The City Of Dublin To Lt. Colonel Sir Ulysses Burgh KCB, 20 January 1815 By John Read, College Green, Dublin, Circa 1815 With curved fullered blade (small areas of old pitting and rust patination) decorated over most of its length on both sides with etched, gilt and brightly etched panels, the former against blued grounds, along one side with the maker's details in capitals on a serpent entwined with foliage, the figure of Britannia, a trophy of arms and a baldachin surmounted by a smoking urn, and along the other with an elaborate martial trophy, a crowned Irish harp above crossed laurels, post-1801 royal arms and Union foliage, the latter against matte grounds and decorated with designs of trophies en suite, stirrup hilt comprising side-guard cast and chased with laurel, lobed rear quillon en suite and with a flower-head on both sides, langets respectively with the arms of the Burgh family in a collar bearing the motto of the Order of the Bath, and the Burgh family crest in silver (motto missing), both against a blued enamelled ground, knuckle-guard with central oval between foliate supporters and enamelled in red and blue with the Order of the Bath, pommel formed as a garlanded cavalryman's helmet with a grotesque mask at the front, faceted back-piece, and ivory grip (minor chip) alternately fluted and chequered between ormolu straps of beadwork, in original regilt scabbard (expertly repaired in its working life) lined in wood covered in burgundy velvet (some wear) and with border engraved decorative piercings along both sides involving shamrocks, the locket engraved with the arms of the City of Dublin on one side, and the presentation inscription on the other, the foliate engraved chape on one side with union foliage and a three-masted ship, the latter between a garland and a crossed palm and laurel, and on the other with a trophy and cornucopia beneath a garland, suspension mounts decorated en suite and each with a ring for suspension 78.5 cm. blade Footnotes: The presentation inscription reads: 'Presented by the City of Dublin to Lt. Colonel Sir Ulysses Burgh KCB 20 January 1815' General Ulysses Burgh, 2nd Baron Downes GCB (1788-1864) was born in Dublin and joined the army as ensign in 1804. He went on to serve as aide-de-camp to Sir John Cradock and later Sir Arthur Wellesley. He participated in the Peninsular War and was promoted Lieutenant-Colonel in 1812. In 1833 he was elected an Irish representative peer and entered the House of Lords.
