A Victorian silver ewer, in original fitted case Edward & John Barnard, London 1855, underside of base with diamond registration mark Slender baluster form, engraved with classical scenes either side over a stippled ground, anthemion motifs and scrolls, oval reserve to the front with armorial engraving, crest above and motto AUT NON TENTAR ISSAUT PERFICE below, with an applied snake scroll handle entwined around the body with head above the hinged cover, with butterfly finial, the whole on a circular foot, contained in a leather covered fitted box, hinged two door front, height of ewer 34cm, height of case 37.5cm, weight 26oz. Footnotes: These are the quartered arms of the CRISPE family of Queeks and Clive Court, Thanet, Kent. The family are descended from Sir Henry CRISPE knight of Queeks a man of great note in the court of Henry VIII and the family descendants were of further note in the mid 17th century.
