A Victorian large silver lidded jug Thomas Smily, London 1862 Tall cylindrical form embossed and chased in high relief with trailing flowers, acanthus and scrolls over a stippled ground, scroll cartouche on one side with inscription, oval boss to the front with engraved crest and 'WEMW', with a silenus mark pouring lip, foliate band to the shaped-dome cover, leafy finial, open-work scroll thumb-piece and leaf-capped scroll handle, with upper mask junction, the skirted base with foliate band and spreading foot, gilt interior, height 32cm, weight 51.3oz. Footnotes: Inscription reads 'East Sussex Hunt 7th April 1864 The Steamers Daughter' The initials are for William Edward Monckton Watts (1829-1899) of Battle Sussex, a surgeon and lifelong bachelor. He was known to be of Callbook Hill in Battle and was the son of James WATTS (1790-1880), also a surgeon of Battle. This crest a griffin's head couped holding in the beak and entwine a serpent.
