Dame Laura Knight, RA, RWS (British, 1877-1970) A Baby signed 'Laura Knight' (lower right) watercolour and charcoal 47.5 x 63.5 cm. (18 5/8 x 25 in.) Footnotes: Provenance With Abbott & Holder, London, 1972 Private Collection, Australia The present lot was drawn and painted in the early days when the artist was staying at Staithes. The baby was a member of the Mining family that lived in the cottage at the top of Cawdor Hill. The artist rented the miner's cottage on a weekly basis, a fee which included her using members of the family as models for domestic scenes in several of the artists Staithes works. The National Portrait Gallery collection holds a bromide print by Yevonde Middleton, depicting the artist in her studio in 1967, where an associated work to the present lot is visible behind the artist (NPG x26358). We are grateful to John Croft for his assistance in cataloguing this work. The work will be included in the online catalogue of Laura Knight's work, under cat.no.1050/3.
