Jessica Dismorr (British, 1885-1939) Souvenir of Eastbourne signed and titled 'Souvenir of Eastbourne/JESSICA DISMORR' (lower left) oil on gesso-prepared board 61.8 x 46.8 cm. (24 1/4 x 18 3/8 in.) Painted circa 1929 Footnotes: Provenance Robin Ody, by whom gifted to William Lipke Quentin Stevenson Exhibited London, New Burlington Galleries, The London Group, Twenty-Seventh Exhibition, 14 October-1 November 1929, cat.no.151 This work commemorates a visit to Eastbourne in 1926, a poignant memory coming shortly before the death of Dismorr's eldest sister Blanche. Rebecca Dismorr looks toward Blanche, who is otherwise occupied reading. The figure looking out to sea may be a stranger, but it has been suggested she is Blanche's nurse, ready to help if required but trying not to interfere with the moment.
