GEORGE WASHINGTON SIGNED DISCHARGE. WASHINGTON, GEORGE. 1732-1799. Document Signed ('Go. Washington'), being a discharge from the Continental Army for Sergeant Elijah Price of the 2nd New York Artillery, 1 p, 340 x 215 mm, Head Quarters [Newburgh], June 9, 1783, countersigned by Jonathan Trumbull, Jr, James Bradford, and by Col John Lamb, awarding Price with the BADGE OF MERIT, with Price's autograph endorsement to the verso assigning the land granted to him by the State of New York for his service to Thos Laurance, March 9, 1784, chipping and closed tears at folds, repaired. DISCHARGE FROM THE ARMY SIGNED BY GEORGE WASHINGTON TO END THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. With peace on the horizon, on June 8, 1783, Washington sent his famous farewell letter to the governors of all the states, announcing his retirement and the dissolution of the Continental Army. Wanting to be make sure his men understood his respect and admiration for their service, he signed each discharge individually. Signed one day after his letter, on June 9th, this discharge is signed for Elijah Price of the 2nd New York Artillery. Price served for 6 years from January 1, 1777, and was awarded the Badge of Merit for his service. According to numerous local histories, Price was present at the crossing of the Delaware. On the reverse of the document, beneath the printed caveat, dated 9 months from the date of his discharge, Price adds an endorsement signing away the 600 acres of land he was promised by the State of New York for his service. Many veterans, faced with harsh post-war economic conditions sold these deeds to speculators, as here, 'for value received.'
