BLANK SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI DIPLOMA, SIGNED. WASHINGTON, GEORGE. 1732-1799. KNOX, HENRY. 1750-1806. Document Printed on Parchment Signed ('H. Knox' as Secretary and 'Go: Washington' as President), an unaccomplished Society of the Cincinnati Diploma, copper engraving after the design of Pierre-Charles L'Enfant, 360 x 580 mm, [Mount Vernon, 1784-1799,] foxing to document, with some minor staining, hole to sheet at left hand border of engraving, signatures very faded. AN UNACCOMPLISHED DIPLOMA FOR THE SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI, SIGNED BY WASHINGTON AND KNOX. Following Washington's death a surplus of signed diplomas remained in the archives of several societies, and these valuable remains were issued judiciously to future inductees. For instance, according to the Society of the Cincinnati, 'The minutes of the New Jersey Society record that, in 1814, twenty-seven signed blank diplomas were deposited in the State Bank at Elizabeth; twenty-five of these remained in the 'Treasurer's trunk' when an inventory was taken in 1826.'
