A rare Thomas Wright gilt brass mechanical universal equinoctial dial, English, circa 1730, signed Made by T Wright Instrument maker to ye KING, the chapter ring reads hours and quarters on the main scale and orbital geared minute scale on the circumference, the base with inset compass rose, blued steel needle and engraved around the outside with the Equation of Time, the dial is set against a central latitude arc, in teardrop-shaped mahogany case with lid, closed 22.5mm x 80mm x 95mm, case 26mm x 95mm x 120mm Footnotes: Provenance Trevor Philip & Sons, London July 1992 Private collection Thomas Wright was apprenticed to John Rowley in 1707 in the Broders' Company and was freed in 1715. From 1718-1748 he had a workshop at the sign of 'The Orrery & Globe' in Fleet Street. He was granted a royal appointment to the Prince of Wales and George II in 1727.
