A collection of four ivory miniature portraits of ladies, the first depicting a fashionable gentlewomen, probably attributable to John Cox Dillman Engleheart (English, 1784-1862), the second perhaps depicting the mother of the Napoleonic landscape artist Horace Verent and possibly circle of Louis Parant (French, 1768-1851), the third depicting a young lady, probably attributable to Charles Roberston (English, 1760-1821), the last depicting a young girl, perhaps attributable to Gervase Spencer (British, 1715-1763) The first dated 1822, the second early 19th century, the final two, probably second half 18th century the first of rectangular form depicting Mrs Roberts of Esher wearing a white and gold turban, the second of rectangular form mounted within a yellow metal and blue enamel border set into a burr wood snuff box, the third of oval form depicting a lady with auburn hair, with a gilt metal and seed pearl set locket frame, the rear inset with a lock of the sitters hair, the last of oval form depicting a young girl wearing a blue brocade dress, previously attributed to Jean Etienne Liotard (Swiss, 1720-1789) within a rope twist gilt frame with engraved and pierced twin bird backplate, the first, 8cm x 7cm (frame 9cm x 8cm), the second, 2.5cm x 2cm (the box 7.5cm long, 4.5cm wide, 1.5cm high), the third, oval, 5.5cm x 4.5cm (frame 8cm x 6xm), the oval, 5.5cm x 4.5cm (frame, 8cm x 5cm) (4) Footnotes: The items that comprise this lot containing ivory have been registered in accordance with the CITES Ivory Act (section 10), Ref: 7Z9M3N3W (Rectangular portrait of woman wearing turban, by John Cox Dillman Engleheart); Ref: 65WYX5XG (Rectangular profile portrait of a lady, by Circle of Louis Parant); Ref: FXVG81KH (Oval portrait of a lady with auburn hair, attributed to Charles Robertson); Ref: WJ2W5FVN (Oval portrait of a young girl wearing a blue dress, attributable to Jean Etienne Liotard or Gervase Spencer) Provenance Property of a Lady The portrait of a lady thought to be the mother of the early 19th century Horace Vernet, possibly Circle of Louis Parant purchased Sotheby's, 17th December 1973, lot 46.
