A few joints slightly cracked, spine ends bumped, chipping to spine ends of atlas, light finger soiling, scattered foxing, atlas with dampstaining to several leaves at lower outside corner, a few plates with short tears at lower fore-edge margins. FIRST EDITION, presentation copies inscribed on the flyleaves of the first volume and atlas: 'Offert a la Société de Chirurgie par le Docteur Monteils chirurgien en chef de l'Hôpital de Mende, Membre Correspondant de la Société de Chirurgie. Mende 13 Janvier 1903 — A. Monteils.' Gall 'introduced the theory of localization of cerebral function, although in a somewhat fantastic form. This pioneer attempt to map out the cerebral cortex according to function gave rise to the pseudo-science of phrenology. The work also contains some important additions to the knowledge of cerebral anatomy' (Garrison-Morton 1389). Heirs of Hippocrates 1159; Wellcome III, 84.
