Nimitz,' a 10 x 14 inch black-and-white photograph of Nimitz signing the Japanese Surrender on board the U.S.S. Missouri, September 2, 1945; Byrd appears in the background, front row. Provenance: Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr (1888-1957); by descent; sold to the present owner. A WONDERFUL AND IMPORTANT ASSOCATION. In the spring of 1945, Vice Admiral Byrd was appointed to Nimitz's staff in the Pacific, in order to survey and plan strategic airbases in the region. Byrd was on Tinian for the bombing of Hiroshima, and can be seen in the background (front row, sixth from right) of this classic photograph of the surrender. Lot to be sold without reserve.
