BYRD ON THE MANHATTAN PROJECT. BYRD, RICHARD. 1888-1957. Autograph Manuscript notebook containing Richard E. Byrd's notes on the Manhattan Project, likely based on a briefing just after the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, approximately 4 pp total, mentions Oppenheimer, Compton, Lawrence and Fermi, in wire bound notebook, with an additional 8 pp written in the rear on human nature, democracy, freedom, Russia, etc, c. 1945, in standard wire-bound Tumbler note book, 225 x 150 mm, some staining, generally clean and solid. WITH: 4 additional autograph notes, 5 pp, various sizes, on love, courage, peace and other subjects; and a printed slip headed 'U.S.S. AUBURN (AGC-10)/ SHIP'S POSITION,' accomplished in manuscript and signed 'R.J. Brown', October 16, 1945 (perhaps an indication of date of composition). Provenance: Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr (1888-1957); by descent; sold to the present owner. In part: 'Church[ill] got better of Roosevelt/ Sir Anderson to blame partly: ... Bush—all science wrong man to handle political agreements ... England supplied 2% & got nearly equal rights ... Men working on project: 1. Oppenheimer prof / physics at University Cal / & Cal Tech / 2. Compton / 3. Lawrence u. cal / 4. Fermi (?) 5. ? / Uranium tranmutted [sic] to plutonium ... bomb t tons atomic 13 lbs / 6' (about) bore gun/ ... dropped from 30,000 feet ... Kioto 1st target but pressure prevented....' His notes continue to discuss targets, bad weather, Tennessee. An interesting look at Byrd's military career through World War II and after, when he was on Nimitz's staff and continued to have high level access to the President.
