London: Privately printed, 1786. 4to. 18 plates (12 full-page), additional engraved 'ex voto' plate. 19th century red morocco gilt, spine with 6 raised bands, top edge gilt. Fire damage to lower edges of binding, with separation of leather from lower spine end, light dampstaining to lower margins, minor foxing and spotting. Provenance: A.L. Ford (1843-1924, book collector and cricket enthusiast). FIRST AND ONLY EDITION of this notorious publication, which led to condemnation of Knight by the religious establishment. Knight was a member of Parliament and of the Society of the Dilettanti, who considered the study of classical art and history a sign of sophistication. Despite the author's scholarly approach to the ancient worship of phallic images, he was viewed as anti-religious and an apologist for libertinism.
