PAINTING FROM LIFE OF BYRD'S HISTORIC FOKKER FLOWN OVER THE POLE. STOKES, FRANK WILBERT. 1858-1955. Oil painting, on board, The Fokker Plane of Comm. Byrd, U.S.N. – 'the Josephine Ford' by F.W. Stokes. 329 x 406 mm, signed, lower right, titled on verso, with 'Sketch from nature by F.W. Stokes – sketched on spot / May 2, 1926 near noon,' some wear to edges, particularly at the corners. Provenance: Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr (1888-1957); by descent; sold to the present owner. ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING OF THE 'JOSEPHINE FORD' AT KING'S BAY JUST BEFORE BYRD'S FIRST EVER FLIGHT OVER THE NORTH POLE. The artist Frank Stokes, a student of Eakins who has been called the 'Catlin of Eskimos,' had accompanied Peary on two expeditions in the 1890s and was in the vicinity as part of Byrd's rival Roald Amundsen's team attempting to fly over the pole. Days later, upon Byrd's (apparently) successful flight, Stokes would compose perhaps his most famous painting Return of Byrd and Bennett from North Pole, now at the Smithsonian along with much his polar work. Stokes has additionally recorded of the 'Josephine Ford' to the verso, 'Moved ashore from the Chantier eve of May 1, 1926, after arrival at Spitzbergen (Svalbard).'
