American Horseman's Saber, c. 1770-85. Brass hilt, broad counter-guard with rounded quillon, two narrow branches joining a wide tapering knuckle bow and connecting to an olive shaped pommel, spiral carved hard wood grip with brass ferules at the top and bottom, the forward side of the counter-guard engraved with the initials 'SB'; slightly curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip, three narrow fullers, with red wool broadcloth washer at top of blade and above the guard. Blade lg. 33 1/2, overall lg. 39 3/8 in. Condition: Hilt toned to deep yellow and has scattered dings and dents, hilt is tight on the blade tang; blade has scattered spots and areas of gray toning and several small nicks on the blade edge. Footnotes: Note This sword is strikingly similar to a sword owned by Brigadier General James Clinton and illustrated in Daniel D. Hartzler, Silver Mounted Swords, The Lattimer Family Collection, (State College: Josten's Printing Co., 2000), p. 7, Fig. 8; and sword 170.SS that is engraved 'PS' on the forward side of the hilt in George C.
