American Dragoon Pistol Engraved 'Protection' on the Side Plate, late 18th century. 12 in., .60 caliber British dragoon pistol barrel with added brass blade front sight, ring decorated breech, the top marked with Tower ordnance proof marks, breech plug tang with crown over crossed scepters mark and small crown, the left side with partial stamped inspector's and barrel maker's mark; flat lock plate with pointed tail; tiger maple stock with line and scroll carving around the lock mortice, side plate, breech plug tang and line carving along the rammer channel; brass furniture including a British trigger guard with acorn finial, butt cap with pointed tang, flat side plate engraved 'Protection,' the inside surface showing evidence that it was fashioned from a clock dial, sheet brass rammer and entry pipes, later rammer with brass tip. Overall lg. 18 1/4 in. Condition: Barrel is mostly bright with light brown toning toward the muzzle; lock toned to gray/brown; stock has a glued crack in the grip, a glued crack extending from the lower edge of the forward part of the lock mortice to the entry pipe, right side of barrel channel has two patches of wood restoration, left side has a patch of wood restoration from the muzzle back to the area of the entry pipe; brass toned to dark yellow, upper rammer pipe missing its pin; action catches only on full-cock.
