British Pattern 1778 Sea Service Musket, last quarter of the 18th century. 35 3/8 in., .80 caliber round barrel with ring decoration at the breech, the top with Tower Ordnance proof marks, the left side of the breech marked '*/IG' for Birmingham ordnance contractor James Galton; replaced Dublin Castle lock with convex surface and pointed tail engraved 'DUBLIN/CASTLE' and below the pan engraved with a crown over 'GR' and stamped with a crowned broad arrow government ownership mark, the inside of the plate marked 'T,' crown over '4' and 'L'; walnut stock with illegibly dated storekeeper's mark on the right side of the butt, and crown over '4' inspector's mark below the trigger guard; brass furniture including a sheet brass butt plate with lobed tang, trigger guard with lobe finial, flat side plate with tail marked on the inside surface 'F' and with scratched assembly numbers, and cast brass rammer pipes and nose band, later steel rammer. Overall lg. 51 1/4 in. CONDITION: Barrel is reconverted, toned to dark brown and with light overall pitting and moderate pitting at the breech; lock is a replacement, top jaw, jaw screw, sear and sear screw are replacements, lock functions properly; stock is restored from half way between the lock and entry pipe forward and has dings, dents, and gouges; brass toned to yellow, rammer not original.
