A Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier Photo Album with Signatures and Signed Photo Photograph Signed ('L Olivier' and 'Vivien Leigh'), 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. gelatin silver print snapshot of Olivier and Leigh signing autographs, 1949. WITH: Signatures ('Vivien Leigh' and 'L Olivier') on 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 in. card laid down to mount, laid into small album; AND WITH: 11 additional snapshots of the couple taken at the same event. Provenance: Kurt Weihs Estate. RARE UNPUBLISHED CANDID PHOTOGRAPHS OF LEIGH AND OLIVIER. On June 1, 1949, the most famous theatrical couple in the world appeared at the Theatrical Garden Party sponsored by the Roehampton Club as a benefit for the Actor's Orphanage Fund. Olivier was the charity's president. They were both at the height of their respective careers. The previous year the pair starred in a sell-out tour of Australia and New Zealand. On March 24, 1949, Olivier won Oscars for Best Actor and Best Picture for his acting and direction of Hamlet. Leigh opened in the original London production of A Streetcar Named Desire, under her husband's direction, at the Aldwych Theatre on October 12. She went on to earn her second Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Blanche DuBois in the 1951 film of the famous Tennessee Williams play. These photographs were taken (and signatures collected) by Austrian-born Jewish artist Kurt Weihs, who worked as a caricaturist in London, but he had to give up that career after he emigrated to the USA in the early 1950s. 5 x 6 in.
