A Darryl Zanuck Scenario for Little Miss Broadway Twentieth Century-Fox, 1938. Typed Manuscript, authorship unknown but annotated and initialed by Darryl Zanuck, 26 pp, 4to, [Los Angeles], December 17, 1937, annotated throughout by Zanuck and others, bound with brads in plain blue typed wrappers, light toning, fading at wrapper edges, mild wear. A star-studded cast appeared in Fox's Little Miss Broadway including Phyllis Brooks and Jimmy Durante, and Zanuck was hoping to capitalize on the former successful pairing of Joel McCrea and Shirley Temple in Our Little Girl (1935) by casting McCrea as the leading man. By 1938, McCrea's star had risen significantly and he likely did not want to play second to Temple, even if he had enjoyed working with her the first time around. Enter George Murphy, a song-and-dance man whose talents certainly fit the bill. Directed by Irving Cummings, Temple plays an orphan (surprise!) whose adoption is threatened by a nasty hotel owner. We can see Zanuck the producer at work here. He has annotated the title page: 'Make plain why show will win verdict if it is good' and 'Too many characters—Davis out?' 9 x 11 in.
