Trunk Containing Uniform of the Patriarchs Militant Branch of the I.O.O.F., Charles Steward Tallman (1824-99), New Bedford and Cottage City (Oak Bluffs), Massachusetts, c. 1890. Canvas lined trunk joined with scalloped iron and oak brackets, inscribed 'C.S. Tallman, / New Bedford, / Mass.' on proper right side, the interior lined with cardstock to contain articles from a purple velvet, gold-braid, and black uniform emblazoned with crossed shepherd's crook and sword, including a pair of velvet cuffs, epaulettes with 'Patriarchs Militant I.O.O.F.' buttons, a leather belt with cast brass buckle depicting a tent symbolizing the Encampment Degree, and three scraps of cloth with two crowns and one crook-sword applique, two gilt brass chains with leather belt loops, one parade sash, and one plumed bicorne hat retaining the stamp of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, New York, on interior silk lining, (trunk) wd. 18, dp. 10, ht. 10 1/2 in.
