Chippendale Mahogany Side Chair, probably Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1770. Finely carved crest centering a C-scrolled shell motif between ogee rails terminating in shaped serpentine ears, the tapered and rounded stiles flanking a pierced double-scroll and heart splat mounted behind the mortised shoe tacked above back rail of the trapezoidal seat frame, which is over-upholstered in later twill fabric, raised on cabriole forelegs with sharp knees over broad ball-and-claw feet, the ogee bracket knee blocks secured to seat stretchers with wrought nails, the slightly outswept rear legs continuing from stiles are chamfered between the pegged joints with blocked and turned stretchers, the front legs with later stained surface, triangular chair blocks possibly original, 55cm wide, 58cm deep, 93cm high (22 3/4in wide, 23in deep, 37 1/4in high).
