Armorial Porcelain Soup Plate with the Arms of Mercer, Jingdezhen and Canton, China, c. 1755. The scalloped splayed rim with enamel-painted with clusters of peonies, lilies, and lotus flowers alternating with shell and bird motifs, a gilt sepia-penciled chain border surrounding the top of deep cavetto, the well depicting a symmetrical scrolled shield bearing the arms intended for MERCER, Per fess or and argent, on a fess gules [azure] between in chief three crosses pattée of the last and in base a mullet of six [seven] points azure [gules] three bezants, below the crest, A stork's head holding a serpent, all between two banners, the smaller one inscribed, 'The Gift POUL' for the motto 'The Grit Poul' (The sea), and on bottom, 'Crux Christi nostra corona' (The cross of Christ is our crown), diam. 9 1/8, ht. 1 1/2 in.
