Pair of Armorial Porcelain Plates with the Arms of Smythe, Viscount Strangford, Jingdezhen, China, c. 1785. Large plates with concave rims and cavetto trimmed with gold band borders, the shallow well centering a heraldic achievement comprised of a small waisted shield bearing the incorrectly tinctured arms of SMYTHE, Viscount Strangford, Dublin, Azure [argent], a chevron engrailed [sable], between three lions passant or, below a viscount's coronet from which emerges the crest, An ounce's head erased argent, collard and chained sable, the shield flanked by lion and ounce supporters, both standing on a pink banner inscribed, 'Virtus incendit vires' (Virtue kindles strength), diam. 9 3/4, ht. 1 in.
