Pair of Armorial Porcelain Plates with the Arms of Dawe Quartering Moore, Lewes, and Selwyne, Jingdezhen, China, c. 1795. Each plate with splayed rim intricately framed by serrated, scalloped, and spearhead borders in gold and blue enamels, the shallow well centering a small rectilinear shield beneath the crest of DAWE, A lion's gam erased argent, holding a fleur-de-lis or, and bearing the Dawe arms, Argent on a pile gules a chevron between three crosses crosslet or; quartering MOORE, Barry of six argent and azure, nine martlets vert; (probably) LEWES, Or a fess azure between three lions sejant [passant] gardant proper; and of SELWYNE, Argent, three annulets in bend between two cotises sable, diam. 9 1/2, ht. 7/8 in. Footnotes: Provenance Elinor Gordon, Villanova, Pennsylvania, 26 October 1988. Literature The service was commissioned by Hill Dawe (1736-1820) of Ditcheat House, Somerset, England, who was not entitled to use the arms.
