Two Porcelain Plates with the Crest of Hussey, Jingdezhen, China, c. 1790. One plate and one soup plate, both 9 3/4-inches in diameter, with splayed rims richly decorated with four picture panels of birds and landscapes rendered in sepia and grisaille enamels, enclosed by floral vine borders in dark cobalt and alternating with fine trellis-patterned gold panels, the interstices filled with pink to the narrow fret border at edge, the cavetto of soup plate featuring an additional band of patterned gilding, and both wells centering the crest of HUSSEY, A hind lodged under a hawthorn tree proper ducally gorged and chained or, above a banner inscribed 'Vix ea nostra voco' (I scarce call these things our own), which forms an oval reserve containing the monogram 'J.C.H.' or 'T.C.H.' in gilt script, (soup) diam. 9 3/4, ht. 1 1/2 in.
