TWO LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/ early 20th century Each circular, the first black lacquer with a flat inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated with floral roundels and a single butterfly in gold togidashi maki-e, with highlights of hirame and gold foil, fitted with a removable tray decorated with a cottage by a stream and distant mountains, the interiors nashiji; The second with a domed inrōbuta decorated in iro-e hiramaki-e on a roiro-nuri ground sprinkled with hirame with a crane in flight among swirling clouds, the rim with a band of floral lozenges, the interior decorated with ferns and foliate scroll 2 7/8in (7.3cm); 3in (7.6cm) diameter (2).
