TWO LACQUER BOXES Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/early 20th century Comprising a brown-lacquer cylindrical box in the form of a section of bamboo, the black-lacquer lid formed as a Chinese mirror decorated with stylized dragons in high relief; A brown-lacquer diamond-shaped box finished on the exterior to resemble the bark of a pine tree, the flush-fitting lid decorated on the top with a rooster and hen under blossoming chrysanthemums in colored hiramaki-e and inlaid lacquer and shell, the interior finished to resemble wood, signed on the underside of the lid Shibayama Bairin 3 1/2in (8.9cm) diameter; 6 1/2in (16.5cm) wide (2).
