A GROUP OF THREE GOLD-LACQUER BOXES Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th/late 19th century Comprising a two-tier stacking kōbako (box for incense) with lobed corners decorated in gold and colored takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi maki-e and embellishments of kirikane, crushed shell and hirame with motifs alluding to Kochō, chapter 24 of Genji monogatari (Tale of Genji), the cover with two boys steering a dragon boat in Murasaki's garden, the sides with musicians in a phoenix boat, the removable tray with butterfly dancers, the interiors nashiji; A lobed kōbako with an overhanging cover with cut sides decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e and gold foil with open and closed books and oversized chrysanthemum blossoms on a kinji ground, the removable tray decorated with chrysanthemums and crashing waves, the interiors and base nashiji; A rectangular box and cover decorated in Rinpa style with autumn plants in gold takamaki-e and inlays of shell and pewter, all on a fundame ground, the interior with floral lozenges in gold and brown hiramaki-e 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2in (8.9 x 11.4 x 6.3cm), the largest (3).
