A JŌHANA-NURI LACQUER KŌBAKO (BOX FOR INCENSE) Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century Modeled in the form of overlapping books set on four scroll feet and decorated in iro-e hiramaki-e on a kinji ground with blossoming peonies and plum-blossom florets, the interior and underside nashiji With a lacquered-wood tomobako storage box inscribed Jōhana maki-e kobako 4 1/4 x 6 1/8 x 1 1/2in (10.8 x 15.5 x 3.8cm) Footnotes: Jōhana maki-e was developed in the town of Jōhana in Toyama prefecture and is a variation of togidashi maki-e.
