A LACQUER KŌGŌ AND TWO MINIATURE LACQUER BOXES Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century The first circular, decorated with three lotus petals in gold hiramaki-e against a glossy brown-lacquer ground, the interior black lacquer; The second rectangular, decorated in inlaid shell and gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with chrysanthemums and autumn grasses on a kinji ground; The third rectangular, with an inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated in two shades of gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and togidashi maki-e with embellishments of hirame against a roiro-nuri ground with a bamboo grove and fence by a stream, the interior and base nashiji 3 1/8in (7.9cm) diameter; 2 3/8 x 1 7/8 x 1 1/8in (6 x 4.7 x 2.6cm); 2 x 2 7/8 x 3/4in (5.1 x 7.3 x 1.9cm) (3).
