TWO SMALL LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) era, late 19th/early 20th century The first of gold lacquer with highlights of hirame, formed as two chrysanthemum blossoms in the round, the removable lobed tray set on four bracket feet and decorated with a basket of flowers, pruning shears, and a ewer in gold and red takamaki-e on a kinji ground, the underside and interior of the kōgō nashiji; The second of reddish-orange and bronze-colored lacquer formed as a persimmon, the leafy stem forming the removable lid, signed with the maker's kaō on the underside of the lid 3 1/4in (8.2cm); 2 3/8in (6cm) wide (2).
