MIMURA UEMON (CIRCA 1825/1826-1882) and ATTRIBUTED TO KODA SHUETSU (1881-1933) Urushi-e (Lacquer Painting) of Three Beauties Edo period (1615-1868), early/mid-19th century Urushi-e (Lacquer Painting) of a Beauty Meiji era (1868-1912), early 20th century The first liquid lacquer on wood, mounted as a framed rectangular panel, depicting the head and shoulders of three beauties: Marie Antoinette holding a Pekinese dog; Yang Guifei with a fan; and the third woman at the top, carrying across her shoulder a pole suspended at each end with a wood bucket, probably an allusion to the two female salt-gatherers in the noh play Matsukaze, within a lacquered wood frame, the top fitted with a metal mount for hanging, signed on the reverse in silver lacquer Etchu Takaoka Mimura Uemon saku with a seal, 45cm x 29cm (17¾in x 11 3/8in); the second lacquered in gold, silver, and polychrome togidashi maki-e, mounted and framed within a natural wood rectangular panel, depicting the head and shoulders of a maiko shown with her head tilted to one side, smiling coyly behind her kimono sleeve, stamped on the reverse with a red seal; with a wood tomobako storage box titled outside on the lid Koda Shuetsu saku fujinzo togidashi maki-e gaku (togidashi maki-e panel with a female figure made by Koda Shuetsu), inscribed inside the lid Kono sakuhin wa oji ko Koda Shuetsu ga Meiji jidai ni shinsaku serumononari Showa nijukyunen aki makie-shi Uehara Kiyoshi (This is an authentic work made by my uncle, the late Koda Shuetsu during the Meiji era, dated autumn 1954, maki-e artist Uehara Kiyoshi) with a seal Kiyoshi, overall: 25.2cm x 21cm (9 7/8in x 8¼in); image: 13cm x 10.3cm (5 1/8in x 4 1/16in).
