A GOLD-LACQUERED TORTOISE-SHELL LARGE FAN Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926), early 20th century Ornately embellished in gold hiramaki-e and kirikane with cranes in flight and standing among seasonal flowers including higanbana (red spider-lily), nadeshiko (pink), susuki (plume grass), peony, hagi (bush clover), kikyo (Chinese bellflowers), ominaeshi (valerian) and kiku (chrysanthemum) on one side and a rural scene depicting two fisherman on a boat on the other, the fishermens' hands, face, legs and feet of ivory, the tortoiseshell sticks joined by silk thread, the guard similarly lacquered with a crane in flight above autumnal plants and flowers, attached with a metal ring from which is suspended an interconnecting silk cord and a matching lacquered tortoise-shell fastener, unsigned; with a plain wood storage box. 25.5cm x 44.5cm (10in x 17½in).
