Three Liverpool delftware tiles, circa 1770-80 Printed in black by Guy Green or Sadler and Green, two within rococo scrolled '88' borders, depicting a one-legged fiddler outside an inn, with a dog begging and three children watching (D5-11), the other with Aesop's fable 'Mercury and the Woodman' (D8-34), the third tile of theatrical interest, 'Mr. King in the Character of Lissardo' (F1-14), the diaper border hung with theatrical trophies, together with the framed source print by James Roberts, tiles 12.8cm x 12.8cm approx, framed print 23.5cm x 18cm (4) Footnotes: Based on the signature 'Abbey, Liverpool' recorded elsewhere on a theatrical tile, Arthur Lane suggests that the Actor series was in fact printed by Richard Abbey, who left Guy Green's employment and set up on his own as a pottery printer in 1773, see Victoria and Albert Museum, A Guide to the Collection of Tiles (1960), p.66. The source by James Roberts was published in Bell's British Theatre on 10 August 1776, the actor Thomas King having played the character of Lissardo in Susanna Centlivre's play The Wonder.
