Two Liverpool ship tiles, circa 1757-61 Printed in black by John Sadler, both depicting a ship in full sail within rococo scroll and foliate borders, one showing the starboard quarter and on calm waters, signed in the lower right corner 'Sadler Co Liverpl', the other seen from the starboard bow in a choppier sea, signed 'Sadler Liverpool' to the lower left corner, 12.7cm x 12.7cm (2) Footnotes: Anthony Ray records that in the early period of copper-plate printing Sadler's black could appear in a range of greyish or greenish tones, as demonstrated by the present lot. Ray also notes that with the exception of the theatrical tiles, after 1761 the rococo scrolled borders were standardised. The 'Sadler Co Liverpl' signature would appear to be very rare but could indicate a date of 1761, when Guy Green was admitted to full partnership. Another tile and a William Reid coffee pot with the same print found on the tile to the right of the photo from the Crane Collection was sold by Bonhams on 31 March 2010, lot 156.
