A Horace Elliot at Ewenny Pottery slipware 'Y Mochyn' pig jug by Edwin Jenkins, dated 1899 The red body glazed in green over white slip, modelled as a pig, the comical animal with two hairy legs to the front, a tubular spout representing its bearded snout with eyes and ears in relief, applied with a curved loop handle as its tail, the details picked out in sgraffito, inscribed 'Allwedd Calon, Cwrw Da' (Sobriety Conceals, Inebriation Reveals) in Welsh to the front, 19cm high, inscribed 'Edwin Jenkins Ewenny Pottery 1899' Footnotes: This shape of jug made by Ewenny potters is from a design by Horace Elliot. The same shape was used for the slightly earlier 'Y Baer' (The Bear) jugs first registered in 1890, and it seems likely that this was adapted for 'Y Mochyn' in circa 1893, see Jonathan Gray, Horace Elliot (2024), p.187. Two very similar pig jugs by Edwin Jenkins are illustrated by Gray (2024), p.189, fig.8.21.
