A very rare 'lithyalin' decanter and stopper, perhaps Holyrood Glassworks, Scotland, circa 1845 Marbled in a rich opaque 'sealing wax' red, the 'Prussian' form applied with three grooved neck rings, with a star-cut mushroom stopper, 22.5cm high (2) Footnotes: Whilst vast majority of 'lithyalin' glass is considered to be of Bohemian or French origin, the form of this decanter is quintessentially British. In 1841 John Ford undertook experiments in the production of so-called 'jasper ware' glass at the Holyrood Flint Glass Works in Edinburgh, and were successful in producing colours including variegated brick-red, see Jill Turnbull, 'Opaque Coloured Glass from the Holyrood Glassworks: John Ford's Jasper Ware', Annales du 16e Congrès de AIHV (2003), pp.295-7. This 'jasper' glass was produced until at least 1879, and it is likely that at least some 'lithyalin' glass traditionally attributed to Germany or France is in fact Scottish. A similar decanter, lacking its stopper, was sold by Christie's on 15 June 2000, lot 206.
