Nikolaos Gysis produced many portraits of his children, from birth to adolescence. The present portrait depicts Penelope Margarita, Gysis's first child. She was named after Gysis's mother-in-law, Penelope, and his own mother, Margarita. Gysis painted the present picture on June 7, 1878 - 6 days after Penelope's birth.
